Hemp Derived D9 vs. Marijuana Derived D9: Separating Fact from Fiction

The cannabis industry has long been plagued by confusing terminology—hemp, marijuana, cannabis, D9, and THC—terms that are often used interchangeably despite their distinct regulatory and scientific nuances. In Louisiana, this confusion is compounded by evolving laws and a rapidly growing market, especially for hemp-derived THC products. Recent tightening of regulations, along with the aftermath of the 2018 Farm Bill, has thrust Delta 9 products—primarily in edibles and beverages—into the spotlight.

    Regulatory Clarity Amidst Growing Demand

State regulators have imposed limits on THC content in consumer products, and many states have banned synthetic cannabinoids that are not naturally occurring. As a result, only naturally derived cannabinoids like Delta 9 THC—the primary psychoactive component found in both hemp and marijuana—are legally used. This means that products containing minor cannabinoids, which must be synthesized to reach levels that produce euphoria or relaxation, face significant regulatory hurdles and have become less prevalent.
